Contrast in the kitchen: Design ideas based on contrast
The kitchen has long become the heart of the home; a place where people cook, eat and spend a lot of time together. It is therefore hardly surprising that kitchen furnishings are no longer merely functional in nature, but also reflect our personal preferences – as well as international design trends such as the fashionable "black and white" look.
For a long time, dark colours were avoided in the kitchen because they supposedly make the room seem smaller. In fact, the opposite is true! When skilfully applied, muted tones convey generosity, elegance and objectivity – especially in combination with brilliant white. Crockery, kitchen furniture, ceramic sinks and fittings from Villeroy & Boch embody the "black and white" theme with geometric patterns, fine reliefs and fascinating surfaces in many variations.
The no-frills butler sink with the historically inspired Mosaïque décor consisting of fine grey lines is a design statement you can see and feel. For a perfect match, add the same pattern as a relief on the kitchen front to create interesting light and shadow effects, depending on the viewing angle. Alternatively, create contrast between black and white over a larger area: ceramic furniture fronts and worktops with a marble or stone look are stylish highlights in the kitchen that will easily stand up to intensive use and frequent cleaning. A tap in anthracite creates another strong accent. Round off the interplay of contrasts in the kitchen with black-and-white tableware decorated with brush strokes or in a natural slate look.
